Heart disease is the #1 killer of women and is more deadly than all forms of cancer, according to the AHA, and this past Friday afternoon was part of the growing effort to educate us all on the how's and why's of heart disease as well as the resources that are available to educate each of us.

On May 9th in Pebble Beach, California, a group of produce industry members including myself, along with other central coast attendees gathered together for the 2014 Northern Central Coast Go Red for Women Luncheon to bring a voice to the silent killer that is heart disease.
Sponsored by supporters that included Sakata, Mann Packing, Taylor Farms and Driscoll’s, the day set the goal of spreading the word to friends and the community about making the right choices and taking action when addressing heart disease in both women and men.
Megan Munro, Anchor, KION 46 Emceed the AHA luncheon that was graced by the heartfelt and passionate stories of Dwight and Suzanne Smith who had encountered life-changing experiences with heart disease and Maria Simon, TV Fitness Expert and AHA Por Tu Corazon National Spokeswoman who detailed her struggle and triumph with discovering a healthier path of life.
A select group of booths kicked off the afternoon with information about heart attack awareness, CPR tips, as well as stroke prevention and education. Local Central Coast programs to improve blood pressure and diet were shared with guests and described ways they are assisting the community in improving the situations of at-risk families through healthier food options, education and recipe ideas. And for the thirsty, there was wine and specialty chocolate on-hand to whet the palate.
The day’s camaraderie and solidarity was evident in a room full of red attire, accessories, smiles and fruit! This cause celebrates the individual struggle in each of us to live a healthier life and helps to rally support around a cause that could affect each of our lives on so many levels.
