California Berry Genetics Expands Blueberry Industry with New Varieties



SELMA, CA - Some of the newest blueberry varieties in the industry are coming out of breeding and nursery company California Berry Genetics. In partnership with renowned University of Georgia Horticulturist Scott NeSmith, Owners Greg and Monica Willems developed the organization’s newest blueberry seedling program.

California Berry Genetics currently offers three exclusive blueberry varieties to commercial growers in the United States: Early Duchess, Sweet Duchess, and Blue Duchess, which is also offered in Mexico. According to a press release, the company’s new varieties are high-yield blueberries that are mechanically harvestable, keeping labor costs and food safety in mind during the operation.

California Berry Genetics also holds exclusive rights to a new type of berry that hit the market this year called Pink Cosmo. This berry is available under the Willems’ consumer-facing brand Farm to Table Berries, featuring eye-catching color and delicious flavor.

In the fall of 2024, California Berry Genetics will be releasing five new commercial blueberry varieties that possess an extra-large size, thick skin, crunchy texture, and an outstanding flavor.
