PHOENIX, AZ - November is home to many celebratory occasions: Thanksgiving, National November Writing Month, and now Arizona Leafy Greens Month after Arizona Governor Doug Ducey proclaimed it so.

With the spotlight on leafy greens growers, this proclamation further recognizes the work that goes into producing nutritious and safe leafy greens. For 10 years now, Arizona has celebrated Leafy Greens Month. According to a press release, since the first celebration, Arizona farmers have produced more than 90 billion servings of lettuce.

The Arizona Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement (LGMA) is helping to support this initiative by turning consumer and buyer eyes on the vast leafy greens farming community in the state. Through social media and influencer partnerships, word will spread about Arizona’s contributions to the supply chain.

Farmer influencer Jon Dinsmore will take over Arizona LGMA’s social feeds to help people see the farming aspect of Arizona leafy greens, and Ramiro Ruiz Jr. will help to share his perspective as a harvest machinery mechanic.

The release went on to note that Arizona is known as the winter lettuce capital of the United States. According to statistics from the United States Department of Agriculture, Arizona farmers grow approximately 25 percent of the total U.S. lettuce supply each year. The season, which lasts from November through March, is due to the mild desert climate. This time period helps fill the gaps in lettuce supply during the winter months.
