Gold Coast Packing's Crystal Chavez Discusses Steady Brussels Sprouts Market
SANTA MARIA, CA - Gather ‘round the holiday table, and don’t come empty-handed. At least, that is the attitude my family has as we prepare for our favorite celebration of the year. Brussels sprouts will be displayed prominently at our feast, and my family is not alone. According to Gold Coast Packing’s Crystal Chavez, the market is currently steady, and I just had to find out more.
“Pricing has been a bit lower for this time of year. There was a bit of an increase over the past weeks for the holiday pull, but pricing has not been as high as the past years because of the increased availability,” the company’s Marketing Coordinator told me.
For Gold Coast Packing, Brussels sprouts have become a year-round item, with sourcing from California’s Santa Maria Valley for the majority of the year and the remainder of the year from Mexico.
Crystal shared that there have been a few issues with weather; rain at the beginning of the month caused some quality issues from the excess moisture, but currently quality is good.
“Quality is good with greater supply than last year. Brussels sprouts have grown in popularity over the last five years, and with that there has been an increase in demand,” Crystal explained. “Growers have responded to the demand by adding Brussels sprouts to their items grown. This year, there are a lot more sprouts to go around than in past years.”
As shoppers pick up their last-minute items to adorn the holiday table, be sure that Brussels sprouts are readily available. And for more produce news, stick with us at ANUK.
