ANTIGO, WI - As the produce industry continues to grow and adapt, so too does the packaging. Volm Companies is building on the innovation momentum created by the demand to evolve with its revolutionary patent-pending technology, Bag-2-Paper™. The new paper packaging is an effective and sustainable solution to traditional options.

Scott Knapkavage, Product Manager and Bag-2-Paper Project Manager, Volm Companies“The amount of produce sold in packaging versus bulk is becoming increasingly more popular, especially with the effects of COVID-19,” Scott Knapkavage, Product Manager and Bag-2-Paper Project Manager, tells me. “Consumers are looking for more sustainable options, and we are seeing a trend toward more paper packaging.”

Unlike other traditional methods for manufacturing a produce bag, Volm’s latest release uses no heat or plastic to seal the package. This allows the Bag-2-Paper machine to use energy more efficiently, which is not only good for the environment but increases production on a vertical packaging machine.

“The first machine was installed in June 2020, and the initial focus was on smaller consumer packages from one to three pounds,” Scott continues. “Based on the initial feedback and sparked interest, we are currently testing packages in a range of three to five pounds as well. We’re hoping to launch that later this year.”

Volm’s immense response and rapid development are indicative of the industry’s response and the company’s commitment to sustainability. With less plastic being used, consumers will gravitate toward more produce with paper packaging, preventing more plastic from entering landfills and answering the growing need for alternative methods.

With innovative leaders like Volm rising up to the challenge and answering the call, our industry will only improve. Watch the fresh produce sector change with us at ANUK.
