Weathermelon Weather Report - June 21, 2019

IRVINE, CA - Good morning, AndNowUKnow readers!

Today, I am bringing you some of the category and weather news from around the industry. Check back twice weekly to see where the rain is falling, the sun is shining, and everything in between.

Possible Hard Freeze Coming to Some Chilean Citrus Growing Regions

Get ready for extreme cold temperatures and rain to hit certain regions of Chile next week. Depending on which weather services you follow, there is the possibility next week for low temperatures in certain regions of Chile to drop to as low as 26° on multiple nights.

The coldest nights are expected to be Monday, the 24th, Thursday the 27th, and Friday the 28th. During the five-day stretch, the minimum temperatures are expected to be below freezing and maximum day temperatures will be in the upper 40°s. Some services such as the Weather Channel are predicting lows to be 31° to 32°, while Accuweather is forecasting a minimum temperature of 26° on Friday, June 26.

These regions are also expecting a decent shot of rain during this time. Monday could see anywhere between .75” to 1.00” of rain, while Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will see between .50” to 1.00’ depending on the day and region.

Between the rain and the freezing temperatures, I would expect harvests of citrus such as mandarins to be affected. If you are currently handling product out of Chile, I would, at a minimum, check with your suppliers. Worst case scenario prepare for possible disruption in supplies.

We will have an updated weather report next Tuesday. Thank you and have a great weekend.
