3,000 Hectares of Mexican Bananas Hit by Black Sigatoka

Black Sigatoka, a fungal leaf spot disease, has affected three thousand hectares of plantains, resulting in a reduction of at least a ton so far and represents great economic losses to farmers from various suburbs of the municipality, said San Bartolo banana producer, Roberto Lopez Molina.
Molina said that plantains are being sold for 4,000 pesos a ton - a low price in the market, however growers have no other option but to sell at this price to recover some investment on their plantations, as reported by TV.Bus.
Molina Lopez said it was unfortunate that the federal and state governments not to support this industry as the area is one of the main producers of plantains internationally.
