NEWPORT BEACH, CA - With summer holidays like Memorial Day and Fourth of July approaching, consumers are stocking up on propane and charcoal to keep their grills running all season. Encouraging retailers to capitalize on seasonal demand, Side Delights® is urging buyers to keep their shelves loaded with potatoes for a versatile addition to any summertime cookout.
“Vegetables such as potatoes are ideal for the grill because they are filling, flavorful, and can be used as an entrée, a side dish, or incorporated into appetizers or salads,” commented Kathleen Triou, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fresh Solutions Network. “Grilling allows the nutrients and flavors to come through, and Side Delights potatoes can be enjoyed on their own or prepared in many delicious ways.”
A recent study from The State of the Barbecue Industry found that 68 percent of grill owners plan to grill for the Fourth of July, 56 percent plan to do so for Memorial Day and Labor Day, and 42 percent will be grilling for Father’s Day, a press release explained. With shoppers on the lookout for the perfect items to throw on the flames, retailers can make it easy for them by adding conventional and value-added potato offerings to their aisles.
In addition to holiday demand, the release went on to note that grilling culture in and of itself is growing in 2022. Consumers are upping their usage of the barbecue for everything from large events to weeknight meals, and they are increasingly reaching for vegetables and other non-meat items to be the star of the meal.
“Grilling and potatoes go hand-in-hand. Potatoes are such a versatile vegetable that the grill pulls even more flavor out of them due to their starchy nature,” added Dustin Green, Head Grill Master at Weber Grill. “Whether the potato is cut up, tossed with oil and seasoned, or grilled whole, one can’t go wrong!”
