Dole Food Company's Bil Goldfield Discusses Mango Program Advantages
CHARLOTTE, NC - Mangos deserve a place in the spotlight all year long, but especially as the weather warms up in the Northern Hemisphere. Consumers are looking toward refreshing and nutritious eating occasions, and mangos fit the bill. Dole Food Company operates a robust mango program ready to meet demand. Here to discuss is Bil Goldfield, Director of Corporate Communications.
“Dole Food Company has a comprehensive mango portfolio featuring five leading mango varieties—Ataulfo, Tommy Atkins, Kent, Keitt, and Haden—in a variety of sizes ranging from small to extra-large. While most suppliers import mangos only from Mexico, our sourcing includes Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru, and this year, we are looking to add Brazil. We also offer organic mangos, which is a segment we are actively expanding to meet growing consumer demand for organic tropical fruit,” Bil began telling me.
This diverse assortment enables retailers to tailor their programs to regional preferences, merchandising strategies, and seasonal demand. As Bil pointed out, Dole also participates in the National Mango Board to bring value through category insights, merchandising suggestions, and cross-portfolio opportunities that allow retailers to get creative and develop high-impact tropical displays that can drive incremental basket growth.
“Dole’s diverse mango portfolio allows us to offer multiple flavor profiles and textures to meet a wide range of shopper preferences. By sourcing from all major mango-producing regions, we maintain the flexibility to pivot seamlessly when weather events or supply disruptions arise,” Bil explained. “This agility protects retail programs, ensures consistent shelf presence, and minimizes gaps in availability—advantages that few competitors can replicate at scale.”
Dole’s sourcing partners are long-standing growers with deep experience in both domestic and international distribution. Every origin is vetted through rigorous protocols to ensure food safety, sustainability, and social compliance with international standards.
Bil relayed that Dole's current mango volumes remain stable and have faced minimal disruptions; the company continually refines its sourcing and quality to meet its own standards.
“Our goal is to build a mango program that reflects the same reliability and market leadership we are lauded for in bananas and pineapples,” Bil said. “We are always looking to increase our volume. Growth remains a priority for us, but we want to make sure our service is just as excellent as the quality of our fruit; while expansion is top of mind, our approach is disciplined, expanding thoughtfully to protect consistency and maintain the integrity of our retail partnerships.”
As with all Dole products, the supplier focuses on consistency, quality, and food safety and continues to integrate sustainability initiatives across its sourcing to ensure responsible practices from farm to shelf.
“Mangos are the No. 1 fruit consumed in the world, with United States mango consumption doubling over the past two decades. This signals the importance of adding mangos to our retailers' and wholesalers' portfolio of tropical fruit,” Bil concluded. “Additionally, mangos have a multicultural and family appeal, offering retailers a meaningful opportunity to diversify their shopper base, increase basket size, and elevate the tropical fruit category. Dole delivers both the fruit and infrastructure to grow this category with confidence.”
Retailers, you heard him! When you’re ready to capitalize on the growing demand for mangos, Dole is here to help.
