Industry Still Waiting for US Chamber of Commerce's Official Announcement of Suspension Agreement with Mexico

The final U.S. Department of Commerce suspension agreement with Mexico, due March 4, 2013, still has not been put into place. The agreement would set higher floor prices for tomatoes, potentially doubling the cost of certain varieties for consumers.
Lance Jungmeyer, President of the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, tells AndNowUKnow, “So far, there has been no official announcement. As far as we know, they are still in negotiations and until the Chamber of Commerce comes out with the official agreement, we are advising that the industry continue under the terms of the 2008 agreement.”
Florida growers have been pushing for the agreement which raises the minimum reference price at which the Mexican plum, cherry and other tomatoes can be sold in the U.S.
The Department of Commerce was not available for immediate comment.
