SuperValu Closes 11 locations, Lets Go of 1,005 Employees
ST LOUIS, MO - SuperValu recently sold 19 of its Shop ‘N Save store locations to Schnuck Markets, as we recently reported. As the company moves forward with that sale, it is shutting down an additional 11 stores and a distribution center, letting go of 1,005 jobs. Of the grand total of layoffs, 788 employees will hail from 10 Missouri-based Shop ‘N Save stores and an office. In addition to those employees, 157 distribution center employees will see layoffs begin November 19th. As of September 30th, 60 employees of the Shop ‘N Save store in Collinsville will be laid off, The St. Louis Business Journal reports. Schnucks acquired 19 of the St. Louis-area Shop ‘N Save stores and a standalone pharmacy, which will transition into Schnucks locations as of October 7th. Shop ‘N Save employees will be offered jobs with the new retailer, the news source conveys.
Shop ‘N Save had 36 stores throughout the St. Louis region. Schnucks has taken on 21 properties, with 11 more slated to close. This leaves four locations under the Shop ‘N Save name. SuperValu has previously said it will close the remaining store locations if a buyer does not come forth.
