Cal-Organic Farms' Bob Borda Discusses Potato and Onion Category Opportunities

BAKERSFIELD, CA - How can we accelerate the growth of the onion and potato sectors? The answers are here on this page. Spring brought new crops of Cal-Organic Farms organic potatoes and onions to the market, and I recently got in touch with Bob Borda, Vice President of Cal-Organic Farms Sales, to discuss the category opportunities that await.

Bob Borda, Vice President of Cal-Organic Farms Sales, Grimmway Farms“The new crops revitalize Cal-Organic Farms’ year-round supply of red, gold, and Russet potatoes,” explains Bob. “Fingerling potatoes will be packed with multi-colored rainbow varieties and, new this year, gold varieties are available for sale from June to October.”

In addition to its potatoes, Cal-Organic Farms’ shipments of organic onions began early in May with red, yellow, and white onions that will continue through November. As the grower reports, field evaluations indicate excellent product quality and good supply in 2023. Yellow onions are available year-round.

With the brand continuing to grow its powerful consumer base, retailers have tons of opportunities to spark category growth in both onions and potatoes.

“Shopper panel data from Numerator shows that Cal-Organic Farms shoppers purchase organic potatoes 25 percent more often than the typical organic vegetable shopper,” Bob details. “Organic potatoes and onions represent only a fraction of the 65 organic vegetables produced by Cal-Organic Farms on more than 50,000 acres. Data analyzed from Numerator also revealed that Cal-Organic Farms is the top organic vegetable brand with the highest household penetration in the United States, which makes the Cal-Organic Farms shopper particularly valuable to retailers.”

Comprising 13 percent of shoppers in the U.S., the data also showed that Cal-Organic Farms shoppers spend 42 percent more at the store than the average shopper, on average; this is because Cal-Organic Farms shoppers visit stores 26 percent more often than the average shopper and spend 13 percent more each visit.

Cal-Organic Farms is helping its partners secure a strong boost in these two staple categories, and trust me when I say, you won’t want to miss out.
