Universities are Paying People to Eat Avocados for Latest Research Study

LOMA LINDA, CA - You know all those times you said that you could eat avocados everyday? No? Just me? That’s embarrassing… Anyway, consumers who are willing to eat an avocado every day for six months or limit themselves to just two per month for the same amount of time could be eligible for free avocados and $300 for scientific research on how the green fruits impact fat.

Yes, consumers are getting paid to eat avocados—whata world, folks!

Loma Linda University, Penn State University, Tufts University, and the University of California Los Angeles are teaming up to research whether the consumption of avocados impacts the reduction of visceral adipose fat, the dangerous fat in abdomens.

Participants will receive free avocados and a $300 stipend if they're accepted into the study

Dubbed The Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial (HAT), the study will be tapping 1,000 avo eaters, 250 from each university, who will be divided into two groups: a test group, which will eat an avocado per day throughout the study, and a control group, which will be restricted to two avocados per month throughout the same time frame.

The study will be vetting applicants in accordance with the following requirements:

  • Be 25-years-old or older
  • Be willing to either eat one avocado per day or six months—or eat only two avocados per month for the same period
  • Measure at least 40 inches around the waist if they are male, or
  • Measure at least 35 inches around the waist if they are female

So, does one have to be a student, and where can one, say, maybe sign up? I'm asking for a friend. Well, for more information or to apply, visit hatstudy.org.

Could avocados be the answer we were all praying for—could my avocado consumption result in a slimmer waist and healthier test results at the doctor’s office? I guess we will have to wait until HAT’s completion to find out, but in the meantime, stick with AndNowUKnow for more news on our industry.
