WASHINGTON, DC - Bringing an exciting new advantage to its delivery service, Giant Food is optimizing two brand-new, fully electric step-van vehicles to advance its 128-vehicle fleet in Hanover, Maryland. The new Giant Delivers vehicles will make daily deliveries to the grocer’s customers in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and Washington, DC.

Joe Urban, Vice President of Distribution Operations, Giant Food“Cleaner transportation is part of Giant’s larger sustainability efforts and commitment to supporting the local environment,” said Joe Urban, Vice President of Distribution Operations at Giant Food. “We are excited to bring these vehicles into our Giant Delivers fleet and kick off the transition to all-electric delivery.”

The vehicles, purchased from Motiv Power Systems, will produce zero emissions and quieter operations while still providing the same grocery storage capacity, according to a press release. They can cover 105 miles on one charge out and will allow Giant Delivers drivers to avoid fuel stops during the course of daily deliveries. With the use of these vehicles, Giant Food’s fleet is expected to displace over 210,000 gallons of petroleum and reduce GHG emissions by 63 percent.

The implementation of these cutting-edge electric vehicles was made possible by a grant presented to the grocer by the Clean Fuels Incentive Program (CFIP), which is designed to create a cleaner and greener transportation sector in Maryland while improving the state’s environment and economy.

The deployment of these vehicles marks a key stage in the company’s commitment to making a positive environmental impact as Giant Food plans to transition more of its fleet to all-electric in the next several years.

Dr. Mary Beth Tung, Director, Maryland Energy Administration“We are thrilled to represent another EV milestone through our Clean Fuels Incentive Program for Maryland,” Dr. Mary Beth Tung, Director at the Maryland Energy Administration, which created and manages CFIP. “As we continue to cement our standing as a transportation electrification leader, we know that supporting the deployment of fleet electric vehicles reduces our reliance on foreign petroleum and emissions, while also lowering operating costs for businesses.”
