USDA Cites Versa Marketing Inc. in California for PACA Violations



WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently imposed sanctions on Versa Marketing Inc. (d.b.a. Versa), in Fresno, California, for failing to meet its contractual obligations to the sellers of produce it purchased. These sanctions include barring the business and the principal operators of the business from engaging in PACA-licensed business or other activities without approval from the USDA. By issuing these penalties, the USDA continues to enforce the prompt and full payment for produce while protecting the rights of sellers and buyers in the marketplace.

Versa failed to pay $792,939 to three sellers for produce that was purchased, received, and accepted in interstate and foreign commerce from February 2018 to August 2018. This is in violation of the PACA. Versa cannot operate in the produce industry until April 23, 2022, and then only after it applies for and is issued a new PACA license by the USDA.

The company’s principal, Alfred Goularte, may not be employed by or affiliated with any PACA licensee until April 23, 2021, and then only with the posting of a USDA approved surety bond.

The USDA is required to publish the finding that a business has committed willful, repeated, and flagrant violations of PACA as well as impose restrictions against those principals determined to be responsibly connected to the business during the violation period. Those individuals, including sole proprietors, partners, members, managers, officers, directors, or major stockholders, may not be employed by or affiliated with any PACA licensee without USDA approval.

The PACA Division, which is a part of AMS’ Fair Trade Practices Program, regulates fair trading practices of produce businesses that are operating subject to PACA, including buyers, sellers, commission merchants, dealers, and brokers within the fruit and vegetable industry.

In the past three years, the USDA resolved approximately 3,500 PACA claims involving more than $58 million. PACA staff also assisted more than 7,800 callers with issues valued at approximately $148 million. These are just two examples of how the USDA continues to support the fruit and vegetable industry.

Organic Produce Network and Category Partner's Report Continued Double-Digit Growth of Organics in May



MONTEREY, CA - Can you smell the green in the air? No, not just the scent of summertime freshness, but the scent of cash flowing in. Organic fresh produce sales and volume continue their double-digit growth trend year over year, with this year's May sales and volume increasing by a whopping 16 percent. This insight was brought to the industry exclusively from the May 2020 Organic Produce Performance Report, released by Organic Produce Network and Category Partners.

March and April similarly saw trends of elevated sales of organic fresh produce, especially since consumers were continuing at-home eating. According to a press release, this trend resulted in May 2020 organic fresh produce sales that topped $662 million.

Overall, organic sales in May increased by 16.3 percent in dollars, and 16.2 percent in volume from May of 2019, while conventional produce dollars increased by 18 percent and volume was up 15.5 percent, the press release went on to explain.

Bananas continue to be the dominant category for volume growth, larger than the combined power of the next two categories, apples and carrots. Per the report, the top three categories—bananas, carrots, and apples, respectively—share a common trait: retail prices for organic options are priced relatively close to the conventional counterpart.

A broader trend also reflected in the report is consumer purchases of organic ingredient products.

Sakata Seed America Announces Acquisition of Danziger Blocky Pepper Program

The Life of Industry Veteran Mark Clausen Honored By Family and Friends



WAYNE, IL - The world needs more Mark Clausens. This is the sentiment shared by many as they celebrate the life of a fresh produce industry veteran and advocate who left us too soon. With gratitude and appreciation for the gifts he brought to those in his life as a true industry professional and mentor to many, we honor Mark with this tribute.

Mark W. Clausen of Wayne, Illinois, (formerly of Burr Ridge), left us on October 19, 2019, surrounded by family and friends. He was 55 when he passed away.

Mark began his journey in this life in August of 1964, born to Rose Marie (neé Nowicki) and William Clausen. The Clausens were longtime residents of Mt. Prospect and were very involved with community events. Mark was a 1982 honors graduate from Forest View High School, playing in the symphonic, marching, and jazz bands. He earned a Bachelor's degree in marketing from DePaul University.

A source of great pride for Mark W. Clausen was his children. He is survived by his son Will and daughter Gabrielle

Hired straight from graduation by PMI Marketers, Mark entered the company’s executive training program. Through his gift of gab and comedic storytelling, Mark quickly rose through the ranks to become Senior Vice President of Acosta's Fresh Foods Program. Mark’s loved ones share that Mark was well known in the food wholesale supply business and his long term professional relationships were a source of great pride to him.

After leaving Acosta, he became President of MicroTek, a technology education company. He was always the deal maker, always with many irons in the fire, and always using the phrase, "You know I'm in the business."

Another source of great pride for Mark was his children. He is survived by his son Will and daughter Gabrielle, his beloved fiancé and long-time partner Jaime Begley, brothers Mike Lewens (Liz) and Bill Lewens (Kelly), step-father John Flaherty and his eight children (Mark's step-siblings), and countless friends.

Mark was an extraordinarily generous man who enjoyed traveling the world with Jaime, VIP access to rock concerts, relaxing with Jaime and their four dogs in their backyard, and playing Petanque (which Mark mastered quickly) at their country club. He was an avid collector of military memorabilia, many fabulous motorcars, and played a most impressive drum set.

Mark’s Celebration of Life Memorial happened Friday, October 25, 2019, at the Dunham Woods Riding Club in Wayne, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to Mark’s two favorite charities: REGAP of Illinois to help out the retired greyhounds, which were such a big part of Mark’s family, and Boys’ Town of Nebraska. Mark and his late father were big believers in the mission of Boys’ Town. He would always say, "There’s no such thing as a bad boy.”

Mark is missed deeply by his friends and family. We extend our deepest condolences to all those who knew Mark and were touched by his passion and love.

In fact, the USDA helps to fund the company’s solutions, which Patrick revealed many growers advocated for because of how integral and functional Hazel Tech products are for the supply-side.

“A lot of the solutions on the market are more complex to implement. Hazel Tech, on the other hand, is about as simple as can be,” Patrick said. “The only thing that is simpler would be not doing anything. But, if you’re a grower or retailer, and you’ve decided quality is a priority, our products are true game-changers, and it’s about as simple and easy as you can get.”

One of the reasons why Hazel Tech has achieved such great results is an emphasis on academic research.

“We began our presence in the stonefruit category and other categories by conducting trials with universities like UC Davis, Oregon State University, and Cornell. We did our first trial with UC Davis in the summer of 2018 that examined the effect of our packaging on apricots from Washington, particularly looking out for quality and color retention, firmness, and shrink over a period of time,” Patrick explained. “Once we saw the results, that was when things started picking up for us in the stonefruit category. We began talking to growers and packers of stonefruit and building out new partnerships.”

Produce Marketing Association Provides Update for Foodservice: Delivered



NEWARK, DE - Foodservice: Delivered, the Produce Marketing Association’s answer to the virtual call of trade shows, is already just around the corner. Slated for July 20-24, this free event will offer all of the insights, business connections, and solutions of past trade shows—just in a new format.

Revenue Officers Seize Over $6.1 Million Worth of Drugs in Fruit Shipment



IRELAND - Another innocent shipment of fresh fruit was caught up in crime over the weekend as officials at the Rosslare Europort in Ireland discovered cannabis amongst a load of melons and oranges.

According to Today FM, 5.5 million euros (upward of $6.19 million USD) worth of the drug was concealed within the fruit containers. The shipment reportedly arrived from Spain and was selected for a random check.

The trailer arrived unaccompanied when officials decided to X-Ray the contents, uncovering 277 kilos (around 610.68 pounds) of cannabis.
