LAREDO, TX – Border protection officers found more than what they bargained for at the World Trade Bridge.

Investigators discovered 1,852 packages allegedly containing 2,072 pounds of marijuana hidden inside a shipment of broccoli. The marijuana carries an estimated street value of $414,464, according to a press release.

The seizure occurred on Tuesday, December 29, when a CBP officer referred a tractor trailer hauling a commercial shipment of broccoli for non-intrusive inspection.

“This seizure was an excellent interception from our CBP officers,” said Port Director Gregory Alvarez, Laredo Port of Entry. “The officer’s attention to detail and utilization of technology led to the discovery of this unique concealment method.”

The paraphernalia was intercepted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers who then turned the case over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations special agents for further investigation.
