Since Westfalia Fruit planted its first avocado orchards in Colombia in 2015, the supplier has played a key role in developing the country’s avocado market, a release explained. The region boasts an ideal climate for growing the fruit, receiving enough rainfall to eliminate the need for irrigation or additional water intake from outside of the regional precipitation, while also benefiting from Westfalia’s sustainable growing practices.

“The nurturing growing conditions, steep terrain, and beautiful soils are what make growing in Colombia so unique,” added Duncan Smith, Technical Manager. “The naturally vigorous growth and good bearing ability of the trees is promoted by the excellent growing conditions and good rains each year.”

The company grows its Hass avocados in the Sonsón region of Colombia using cutting-edge clonal rootstock technology, and anticipates an increased use of the clonal planting, which will strengthen the future of Colombian avocados.
