Weathermelon Weather Report - August 27, 2019

IRVINE, CA - Good morning, AndNowUKnow readers!

After some time away, I am back bringing you some of the category and weather news from around the industry. Check back twice weekly to see where the rain is falling, the sun is shining, and everything in between.

Here are a few of the regions to be aware of...

EXCESSIVE HEAT COMING TO THE NORTHWEST

Parts of Oregon and Washington can expect excessive heat today and tomorrow. In Oregon, the entire length of the Willamette Valley from Eugene in the South up to Portland in the North will see high temperatures today and tomorrow in the upper 90°s, with some isolated 100° temperatures. These temperatures are about 10° above Monday’s highs. This valley is a big player in the berry markets this time of year and these warm temperatures might cause a bump in production.

The Wenatchee and Yakima Valleys of Washington will also see high temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90°s this week. Items coming from these regions may see a small spike in production as well. Temperatures in Washington will cool off on Sunday of this week.

EXCESSIVE HEAT CONTINUES IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY

The latest heat wave to hit the SJ Valley, which started Sunday, will continue through tomorrow. Maximum temperatures up and down the valley are ranging from 103° to 106° depending on the day and location. Possible bump in production on items coming from this area? Please check with shippers.

LATE WINTER HEAT WAVE IN CHILE

Major Chilean fruit growing regions are currently experiencing a late winter heat wave. The high temperatures are ranging from the upper 70°s to the mid 80°s and lows in the mid 50°s. Today will be the peak of the heat wave that started late last week and will continue through tomorrow. These temperatures are 15°-20° above normal for this time of year. By the weekend, highs will be back down in the 60°s and minimums in the low 40°s. Could these temperature swings have any effect on upcoming tree fruit blossoms?

HURRICANE CENTER UPDATE

The main concern now is Tropical Storm Dorian, which is just off the northern coast of South America, making its way west toward Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic where it should hit sometime Thursday morning. There is about a 90 percent chance of the storm forming a cyclone. Rains along the way will range from 3” to 9”. If the storm makes it way through the island of Hispaniola intact, then there may be a chance it makes landfall somewhere in Florida this weekend. We will have an update for you on Friday.

Thank you as always! We'll be back on Friday with another report.

USDA Cites The Fruit Club in South Dakota for PACA Violations

WASHINGTON, DC - As part of its efforts to enforce the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act (PACA) and ensure fair trading practices within the U.S. produce industry, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has imposed sanctions on The Fruit Club, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for failing to meet its contractual obligations to the sellers of produce it purchased. These sanctions include barring the business and the principal operators of the business from engaging in PACA-licensed business or other activities without approval from USDA. By issuing these penalties, USDA continues to enforce the prompt and full payment for produce while protecting the rights of sellers and buyers in the marketplace.

Direct from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service:

The Fruit Club failed to pay $367,040 to four sellers for produce that it purchased, received, and accepted in interstate commerce from June 2016 to October 2017. This is in violation of the PACA. As a result of these actions, The Fruit Club cannot operate in the produce industry until August 16, 2021, and then only after they apply for and are issued a new PACA license by USDA.

The company’s Principal, Matthew Kleinsasser, may not be employed by or affiliated with any PACA licensee until August 16, 2020, and then only with the posting of a USDA approved surety bond.

USDA is required to publish the finding that a business has committed willful, repeated, and flagrant violations of PACA as well as impose restrictions against those principals determined to be responsibly connected to the business during the violation period. Those individuals, including sole proprietors, partners, members, managers, officers, directors or major stockholders may not be employed by or affiliated with any PACA licensee without USDA approval.

The PACA Division, which is in the Fair Trade Practices Program in the Agricultural Marketing Service, regulates fair trading practices of produce businesses that are operating subject to PACA, including buyers, sellers, commission merchants, dealers, and brokers within the fruit and vegetable industry.

In the past three years, USDA resolved approximately 3,350 PACA claims involving more than $63 million. PACA staff also assisted more than 8,000 callers with issues valued at approximately $156 million. These are just two examples of how USDA continues to support the fruit and vegetable industry.

LOUISVILLE, KY - Beyond Meat® has been leading the plant-based pack after it went public in April of this year. Since then, the company has seen its stock prices soar in conjunction with its recent partnerships with popular fast food restaurant chains and meal kit companies. Wish Farms' James Peterson Talks California Summer Berries and New Variety

PLANT CITY, FL - Wish Farms is following the sun with its berry program, currently in the midst of its summer program in California. The outlook is a path to increasing demand in the off months, premium flavor, and a steady market.

James Peterson, VP of Sales, Wish Farms“We’ve had ideal weather during the planting season and expect a quality crop,” James Peterson, VP of Sales, shares, explaining California weather hasn’t dealt any blows to crop production or quality. “We began harvesting mid-August and will continue through November, projecting promotional volumes throughout September.”

In fact, James says the market’s steadiness at this time is better than he has seen in the last two years. As for the current crop, Wish Farms’ product includes both conventional and organic Monterey and Cabrillo strawberry varieties, which have higher brix and flavor profiles.

Wish Farms began harvesting mid-August and will continue through November

“Wish Farms is focused on flavor, and because of this, we have dedicated ourselves to growing only varieties that we would be willing to take home to our families,” he tells me, with a surprise up the team’s sleeve coming as soon as next year. “We are excited to release a new proprietary strawberry variety on a small scale with plans to ramp up in the 2020-2021 season. We made the decision a few years ago to discontinue select varieties from our program that do not meet our flavor standards. While high yield and shipability are desirable strawberry traits, we feel strongly that consumers will come back again and again for berries that taste good.”

He explains to me that strawberry demand tends to trend lower in September and October. The company believes there is a direct correlation between lower demand and strawberry varieties that lack flavor being grown in this time period.

Wish Farms is combatting the typical downslope of demand for strawberries in September and October by cultivating a new, flavorful proprietary strawberry

“We hope by making growing decisions and varietal selections that focus on flavor, we can reverse this trend,” he concludes.

Wish Farms continues to invest in breeding and varietal trials across all growing regions. This coming Florida strawberry season, the company’s primary acreage will be dedicated to the consumer favorite Sweet Sensations. And with sibling varieties on the horizon that hold promise for equal popularity, the berry market seems to be in for some new trends in demand!
